Reproductive Disease
This page covers non-cancer conditions of the reproductive organs that are not part of pregnancy. The largest group in this index is endometriosis, where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it and can cause pain and infertility. Other conditions include adenomyosis, in which similar tissue grows into the muscle wall of the uterus, polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal condition that affects ovulation and is closely tied to how the body handles sugar, and infertility in either partner, including conditions where sperm are absent.
A common problem is that diagnosis can take a long time or require an invasive procedure. Endometriosis is the clearest example. A definite diagnosis can require keyhole surgery to look inside the abdomen, and delays from the first symptoms to diagnosis are often measured in years. A reliable blood or fluid test could shorten that process.
Researchers look at the same types of material used elsewhere in liquid biopsy. Affected tissue can release RNA, proteins, and small packages of cell material into blood, and the amounts or patterns may differ from those in people without the condition. Some studies use menstrual blood or fluid from the pelvis because those samples are closer to the tissue of interest. In polycystic ovary syndrome, many of the signals overlap with metabolic disease because the two conditions share a lot of biology, so papers may belong in both categories.
Most of this work is still at the stage of finding group differences rather than proving a test that can guide care for one person. The signals found so far are often modest, may overlap with other diseases of the same organs, and can change across the menstrual cycle. That makes a single measurement difficult to interpret. Many proposed markers also have not been tested in a second independent group of patients, which is an important step before a promising finding can become a dependable test.
