Two Decades Of Invention

Inventions by earliest priority year (when the idea was first filed). One invention = one patent family, so a US continuation chain or a multi-office filing counts once. Blue is granted; amber is published applications still pending, dated by the same rule and de-duplicated onto the same families. The granted curve falls away after 2018 because recent filings have not issued yet — the pending band is what that fall was hiding. The last years are still short: an application published ~18 months after filing, so 2024–26 has not appeared yet either.

How This Was Built

  • Retrieval. USPTO PatentsView bulk product (PVGPATDIS): 59.8M CPC rows → in-family on the frozen CPC code family (v1.1, edition 2026.01).
  • Scope test mirrors the research track: the CPC family is a recall filter — it classifies the invention, not the sample — so every in-family patent is then read by a Haiku classifier (temperature 0, shared 28-tag vocabulary) that applies both tests: is the analyte circulating or cell-free, and is it measured as a disease biomarker. Result: in-scope documents.
  • Family de-duplication (the counting unit). Those documents collapse into inventions by INPADOC patent family — a US continuation chain or a multi-office filing of one invention counts once. Dated by earliest priority year. (See the decision record for why families, not documents.)
  • Age-normalized impact. Portfolio strength uses citations-per-year, never raw counts.
  • Pending applications.
  • Known limits. Every breakdown on this page other than the growth chart — platform, application, breadth, footprint, owners, impact, per-company IP — counts granted inventions only. Licensed academic IP is not counted against the company that commercializes it. CN-only inventions (never filed in the US) are recovered in the separate China view — retrieved via BigQuery / Google Patents, classified with the same rubric, with harmonized CN owners joined in. It stays a separate view because it carries pending applications and machine-translated abstracts, and has no citation data (so no impact ranking).
